Radiology

Introduction

The major socio-economical development of Saudi Arabia in the last quarter of the twentieth century is unprecedented in the history of the world. This development involved and improved all sectors of the society including the health care system. New hospitals equipped with some of the finest medical technology in the world and staffed by various personnel including top- flight specialists in various fields endeavour to make Saudi Arabia medically self- sufficient.

To participate in these rapid changes, the Department of Radiology of the College of Medicine, King Saud University, has felt the need for initiating a high-grade postgraduate training programme in Radiology in order to provide the immediate staffing needs of the Kingdom, as well as ensuring a self -perpetuating standard of radiological excellence and training within the Kingdom.

The following programme for Radiological training is based on a mixture of European and North American training methods, and it is designed to graduate welltrained radiologists who will rank with the standards of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists, or the Certificate of the American Board of Radiology.

Objectives

The Department of Radiology has established a comprehensive Fellowship Programme which is designed to graduate well-trained radiologists with both academic and professional competence in modern diagnostic radiology including interventional techniques.

The four-year fellowship programme shall fulfill the following objectives:

1.To produce competent radiologists capable of providing first class specialist service.

2. To identify and encourage the future leaders, researchers and teachers of Radiology.

Rules and Regulations

Rules and regulations comply with the rules of the Fellowship Programme of King Saud University.

Criteria for admission to the Fellowship Programme include:

1. A basic medical qualification such as the M.B.B.S. or equivalent degree acceptable by the King Saud University with minimum grade of “Good.”

2. To have had two years of clinical experience after qualification, in any of the major clinical specialities (e.g. Paediatrics, Medicine, O.B./Gyne, Surgery, and others), internship period considered as one year of clinical experience.

3. Passing a personal interview and an acceptance examination held by the department.

4. Provision by the candidate of a release letter from his/her sponsor for the whole duration of the programme.

Relationship between Diploma and Fellowship

1. King Saud University graduates holding Diploma in Medical RadioDiagnosis and Radiology Diploma candidates who fulfill the admission requirement for the Fellowship may be admitted to the Fellowship Programme. Accreditation of all or part of the diploma training time in respect of each candidate shall be determined by the Departmental Residency Training Committee and approved by the Residence Board.

2. Fellowship candidates are allowed to sit for Diploma examination during their Fellowship training after successful completion of the required training as recommended by the Residency Training Committee and approved by the Residency Board. If they pass, they will be awarded the Diploma Certificate in Medical RadioDiagnosis (DMRD) of King Saud University.

Place of Training

The programme is based at the College of Medicine and the University Hospitals. Didactic lectures, tutorials, seminars and special courses are conducted at the College of Medicine and King Khalid University Hospital. Part of the clinical training may be spent in rotations at other Riyadh hospitals, e.g. King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Riyadh Military Hospital, King Fahad National Guard Hospital, Security Forces Hospital and Riyadh Central Hospital. Those hospitals will be included in the rotation subject to prevailing staffing and facilities. Continuous evaluation of those hospitals for inclusion in the programme will be done regularly by the department and by the Residency Board.
